friday five: recently visited venues for cold, wet alcoholic things

Five: Cornerstore – great little local bar with happy staff, a few plasma screens, good wine list. Gets lovely evening sun. Attracts those Brooklyn residents who don’t want to stick to the carpet of the tui bar in the village. Perfect for neighbourhood watch meetings, quiz nights and first dates. Can recommend the antipasto platters. Gets bonus points as it is a 6 minute stumble from my house (which is handy if date goes well ;)

Four: Chow – one of my favourite places to eat in welly – food is asianpacificfusionofyumminess and is tasty as all heck. When Lisa (BFF) was up from Dunners we enjoyed a few aperitifs at the bar. I could quite happily bathe in the Foreshore Fizz.

Three: Hummingbird – a welly landmark on courtney place. Great for dinner, a kiwi interpretation of tapas. Cute staff who can throw a vodka cocktail together; solid wine list. Does tend to attract the suited male of a ‘certain age’ on the hunt. Usually married. Sigh.

Two: Concrete – little bar upstairs from cable car lane – lovely evening sun and views of LQ. Perfect post-work venue and attracts the central city crowd. Sometimes have live music. Wins points for having Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc on the list (does anyone know where I can buy this as its never at Thorndon New World?).

One: Dockside – welly’s premiere dry-cleaners (it’s where you go to pick up a suit) but if you can put that aside for a moment, for the location alone this would win number one spot – on a sunny day you cannot beat the outside bar over the water. It always has a buzzy atmosphere and they get all the basics right (though they really do need to upgrade the bathrooms). Just remember, they don’t call it Cockside for nothing.
