Tomorrow, the sun is at its lowest point, making Saturday night the longest from dusk to sunrise. Solstice comes from the Latin ‘Solstitum’, from sol (sun) and stitium (a stoppage). In New Zealand it is also Matariki when the Pleiades stars rise brightly above us, and we celebrate Maori New Year.
And while you don’t need to attend naked pagan dances in the ‘Rapa, midwinter deserves a marker. You know, something aimed at stirring the wit, staving off malaise, resetting the internal clock and rekindling the spirit! I for one, will be celebrating another All Black win (cross fingers and toes) at #54 with Science Guy, and The Divine Mr & Ms G. There will be firelight, feasting and general communuion with loved ones. Oh and also I’ll be listening to this.
For some other, truely awesome suggestions check out Keri Hume’s list via the daily delight of Poneke.
