j9

I first met J9 almost 10 years ago when we both ‘worked the muff’. She is the kind of girl who will make you soup on a wet day. Or send you a book because she saw it while browsing amazon. She is the perfect girl to go to Dover for a girlie pamper weekend with. Or meet for Moroccan mint tea on a wet Sunday in London. She is interested and interesting, has a passion and humour that makes being around her pretty awesome. And from running a division of Sony Europe, she and her beloved Hone have settled back in New Plymouth with their son Alex. Who is now a thriving one year old (apparently – I mean wtf happened to that year?). She is immersing herself in motherhood and has now begun training to become a lactation consultant. And she knits!

She has just sent me a lovely long email about what she’s up to and I quote: ‘I think more people need to just STOP, take a breath, really open their eyes, look around themselves for a second, and say “Is this important or is it just bullshit? Do I make a difference? What legacy am I leaving?”…I don’t think I’d be able to go back into the corporate world now without something else being there to drive me … I wouldn’t be able to stomach the bullshit. So … this is me looking for some meaning :)’. I love her ability to cut through to the heart of it all. Her courage to evolve is inspiring. And the best thing about J9 is I don’t think she has an inkling about how powerful she is.

As I approach my birthday and think about what I want my year of 36 to be full of – authenticity is the word that comes to mind. J9 is my barometer for authentic. Every time I have EBT and marmalade on toast, I think of her :)

Image above is from the amazing SwirlyGirl who has just published her first book.
