Last week, while indulging in an I’m-on-leave-pedicure, I found myself reading a many months old magazine and I noticed an Australian tampon ad. I am not a fan of tampon ads. And this one was extra special. It featured a woman and a stuffed beaver. The pair spend time together at the beach, the hairdressers. They have lunch.
‘You’ve only got one’, the ad says, ‘so for the ultimate care down there, make it U.’
The ad campaign was controversial across the ditch where it received so many complaints that, according to this story, the ad was under threat of being pulled. The ads first aired in March and are still widely available on youtube.
The 9 News story is worth referencing as it also includes the following statistic: ‘Kotex research found people in that age group [18-to-24-year-old women] had 181 alternative names for the vagina and 94 per cent said they used nicknames for their own genitals.
The term ‘beaver’ was the 11th most used by the people surveyed.’
Um. WTF?
