It was after school and I was next door at the Mills’ house when news of the Erubus disaster reached Waikouaiti. I had just turned six and all I knew was that a Very Bad Thing had happened. Everyone was a bit sad. We were baking scones and we were meant to go for a walk to the shops to get cream. But then everyone wanted to listen to the radio so we ended up just having jam. Stink.
29 years later I am listening to Rod Fyfe say he will ‘bring the team home’. Air New Zealand is a fantastic airline. The new domestic check-in is a fantastic example of technology meeting service and design. And the only way to fly long haul is Air New Zealand pod class; with the smartly dressed waitresses of the sky, the flat beds and the 42 below cocktails. Magic.
After the last few days, its easy to see why our national carrier is doing so well: they are in the safe hands of a good leader.
