getting fit

I’ve been on both sides of the redundancy coin and its an awful bloody process. Bad news should be delivered with empathy and honesty. I cannot believe the patronising scripted bullshit that is churned out from HR departments en masse.

Such as this gem: apparently Yahoo isn’t firing people — it’s getting fit. And it has created pages upon pages of instructions on how to sack employees.

Still, this is better than the ‘right sizing’ exercise of a new media company I worked for. We were all called to a meeting. My boss got up in front of everyone and switched on a power point. ‘Here is our current organisation. Page 2 shows our new organisation. If your name is not in one of these little boxes (indicates with red light pointer thingy), please go to Meeting Room 3 where HR are waiting for you. Thanks for your work’. Then he left the room.
