kung hey fat choy!

Happy Chinese New Year from Singapore! Its the Year of the Ox. Those born under the Ox sign are dependable, calm, modest and stable. Science Guy and I are both Oxen (as is Barack Obama, Walt Disney and Barbara Cartland). We all have high hopes for 2009 (except for Babs and Walt obviously, who are dead just now).

As I checked-in, I was given a red packet with a big gold dragon on the front, containing chocolate money. Bloody good start I thought. But then Singapore Airlines went and claimed my bags because I am staying at the Transit Hotel and you can’t clear customs if you want to stay in the Airport. Not the best news at 1am after a 10 hour flight. After some awesome negotiation skills on my part, I was able to remove essential items from my case and was escorted up to the Hotel by two amred customs officials, who insisted on carrying the big orange plastic refugee bag, containing my toiletries and fresh knickers, jeans, t-shirt.

And Changi Airport is all in for the New Year celebrations – its a weird Asian stage musical set of gold and red. Tossing Yusheng is a uniquely Singaporean New Year tradition where the higher you toss, the more prosperity you will have. Yusheng is raw fish salad. I am grateful that as yet, no one has involved me in this.
