the big picture

Flying into Heathrow at night, with the sprawling city lit up below is fantastic. How beautiful are these pics? The Boston Globe has a stunning large-format photography blog called ‘The Big Picture’. Today there are featuring amazingly detailed bird’s-eye views of London at night by photographer Jason Hawkes. According to the site, Jason shot these images with a camera attached to gyro-stabilized mounts from a Eurocopter AS355, hired out at around £1150 per hour, using Nikon gear and either a 14-24mm or a 70-200mm lens.

More London shots from August 2008 here.

I’ve taken off from Heathrow at night and flown for what seemed like forever over London on the climb out. It was incredible. But what was even better was coming in to New York JFK at night. We came in over New Jersey and then Manhattan and all the bridges and then turned over Far Rockaway and came down over Jamaica Bay to the runway. It was one of the most spectacular and unforgettable landings of my life and I couldn’t stop the words and tune of “Caught Between the Moon and New York City” going through my mind as the 767 came slowly down over the city.

Poneke: I love that song :)BI15: I think it’s just the evening light – it is very weirdy golden here. But they could have been digitally enhanced or something.

Wow those are incredible shots. It’s been 7 or more years since I was last in UK and although Sydney’s impressively large and glittery, London looks just massive. The colours are weird though; too pastel-like?
