the femmes, the specials and john

Watched the brilliant Grosse Pointe Blank last night. Has to have one of the best ever movie soundtracks. And I’ve loved John Cusack since ‘Say Anything’ but Dan Ackroyd gets the best lines in this one: [singing] I’ll be comin’ around the mountain when I come / I’ll be comin’ around the mountain when I come / I’ll be blowin’ your fuckin’ head off / I’ll be blowin’ your fuckin’ head off / I’ll be whackin’ your fuckin’ mind out when I come’.

It’s definitely worth a look. And yes it does feel good to exercise but not the day after. Good lord I can barely walk today and I really took it easy yesterday!

It’s a great flick and I agree Cusack’s a fantastic actor and it’s easily the best stuff Ackroyd or Driver have done lately too. Though it’s a bit boy-angsty (so my wife tells me), you should give High Fidelity a go too (if you’ve not already). Cusack’s agaib great but so too is the supporting cast. My only gripe about the movie is that the best line of the book is not in the cinema release of the movie – it is in the extras however.

In the movie, shortly after his partner, Laura, leaves him, her friend (Liz, who’s portrayed by Jone Cusack) pays him a visit and is initially sympathetic. Sometime later, Liz storms into Rob’s/Cusack’s shop and calls him various names. In the book but not the movie, this is followed by a monolouge in which Rob/Cusack explains that Liz’s/Joan’s abuse probably follows from Laura telling Liz about Rob/Cusack’s various failings which include infidelities (which lead to Laura having an abortion but not telling Rob/Cusack). There’s five things he’s done, which he imagines his Laura’s told Liz/Joan resulting in her change of attitude towards him.The monologue finishes with Rob/Cusack asking you, the reader, to go away and write down the five shittiest things you’ve done to your partner… he concludes by challenging the reader to decide “who’s the arsehole now”.It’s actually really well done in the movie, I’m sorry they didn’t include it in the cinema release.
