Today I am being SO tested. With the frustration of the tube strike and then the waiting and the waiting for The Decision. That has now been delayed until tomorrow. My jaw has been clenched for hours and I am antsy and in limbo. This is absolutely against my natural state: I don’t manage uncertainty well, and I am incapable of letting out anger or frustration constructively. And so I have tried to be gentle with myself tonight. Science Guy was spontaneously offered tickets to the football, and I am home alone. I have been exploring blogs and other highlights of the information superhighway, trying to avoid the churny, sqirmy feeling of not-knowing.
Good things about today: I have been invited to a Blog Babe Blind Date, by gorgeous Leonie, a fellow travelling wahine. And I have treated myself to lightcatchers and sunflowers from Susannah’s etsy store, perfect for the new study! And now I am off to bed with a quite fabulous find from this afternoon – a 1922 first print of Jane Austen’s ‘Love & Friendship and Other Early Works’ that was hiding behind a stack of other books at Fosters. I am absolutely chuffed to pieces to have it in my shelves.
Inside the front cover in fountain pen, is written ‘May Dickinson, with Cissy’s love’.

… and I quote:
‘It is a truth universally acknowleded that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains. Never was this truth more plain than during the recent attacks at Netherfield Park, in which a household of eighteen was slaughtered and consumed by a horde of the living dead.’
Poor Jane Austen must be turning in her grave!
SO jealous of your fabulous find; I’ve been going through a bit of an english lit phase too (not actually sure if I ever really leave it). Have just re-read Elizabeth Gaskell’s “North and South” and am now pondering what to pick up next.
H has threatened to buy me the book below for my birthday next month. He’d better bloody not.

I loved N&S, but then I was born a “northern lass” ;). Once you’ve read it, see if you can get your hands on the 2004 mini series, with Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe – it’s a fantastic adaptation.
And please, no encouragement for H! He’s bad enough as it is :)
Sas – Guess what I am watching right now? Best BBC mini-series ever. The Boy’s mum gave it to me for my birthday – I love this woman like my own mother (thank heavens for wonderful in-laws). And yes, I think you and Science Guy should invest in a Mr. Darcy flouncy shirt immediately.
It is fabulous. I think this could be my summer of Jane Austen. You know, where you re-read all of it.
Might even try to get Science Guy in one of those puffy shirts (a la Mr Darcy and the river). If he loved me he would right?
ooooh nice!
I haven’t read N&S – would you recommend?
I have be meaning to pick up Vanity Fair for like, years!
I always thought P&P could do with some hot zombie action. Go H ;)
I love old books, especially ones with inscriptions. I like to imagine who the people are and what was the occassion. Great find.
Fingers crossed for you for that job!
Oh my. I would probably be at least three-quarters of the way through a bottle of wine by now. Kudos to you on your Austen gem, though – it’s like the universe has sent you a delicious distraction from the squirmy feelings :)
