By the following Friday we’d given notice on our flat. I had mentally prepared to leave the boyfriend, though I didn’t actually do that for another 6 months. And then I was on a plane to Wellington, with two bags and the phone number of my Mum’s best friend’s niece who lived in a place called Brooklyn. So I ran away to Welly for nearly three years, and then to London for six and then home to Welly again for another couple. Oh yeah, then back to London town again. And now the time for running away has officially finished, and I’ve stopped. The other night after a few days of coupley fractiousness I realised that there isn’t anything we could fight about that would make me want to leave.
Running away is good for you. I thoroughly recommend it. I very much enjoyed it. Because it was what I needed at the time, and because I discovered the pleasure of running away, in big or little ways. A bit of the way through running away literally, I learnt how to run away on the internet – with the help of the Magical Mystery Tour. And now there is no end to it.
The thing that makes me tick, is the lack of destination.
