2009: the year of adventuring

This has been a year of intentionally growing titanium ovaries. Typically for me, I was quite enthusiastic at the planning stage (am now considering resorting to Clever Hidey Pants as favoured method of arse-shrinkage) and a bit shite at the follow through. Particularly of the things I didn’t really want to do (like exercise repeatedly).

And yet, despite my body and brain being a bastard to me, I am a bit gobsmaked at what this year has been made of:

I arrived in London just a few days before the Snowmagedon ground London to a halt (one of the things about England that I love is the country’s inability to let go of any weather or transport related chaos: just say ‘fuck this’, stay in the warmth and watch loads of DVDs).

Within a matter of weeks I managed to find work and a little flat. Noshy and I reacquainted in the best way. But it didn’t feel proper real until Science Guy arrived. And since then we have been lucky to escape to the Cotswolds, the Lakes, a tiny village in Cornwall, Paris and we have just returned from Christmas in the Isle of Skye. Along with the travelly-trips, I have found myself venturing into new territory with work. And there is more exciting developments to come next year.

Perhaps the most important adventures were the ones closest to my heart. After reading Sus’ blog for years, I spent eight weeks Unravelling. And, well: WOW.

I have slowly let go of the grief around losing my beloved Mum. And while I know there will be moments of continued loss, like flotsam in a sunny room; I know I have mostly healed.

And I learnt about standing up for me. And about being ok with an unhappy ending.

Via the hardest slog ever, I managed to finish my post-grad study. I am still working out what that means, if anything. But I am so glad that’s over.

And due to the usual issue of Taking on Too Much For No Rational Reason, I required a period of quiet. Looking back this feels like a breakthrough rather than a breakdown. There has been a few of those.

I have de-lurked myself with wondrous results. The fabulous BBC; Ms Thursday, Frou Frou Frippery, Zen & the Art of Peacekeeping and Doorways Traveler have been a constant source of support and fun all year. More recently I have discovered Steffi, DJan, GreenInk, and She Left On A Monday. The lads I follow have remained consistently brilliant and at times surreal. My favourite male bloggers tend to be a touch misanthropic: Infinitely True, I Hate The Earth, Literally Another Aussie in London, Mr London Street and Citizen of the Month are all worth a click through.

And the most exciting and joyous event: my love proposed to me on a random Saturday in November. He is very awesome and I love him very much. It feels like with Science Guy as Goose to my Maverick, the adventure is just beginning (except for the bit with the ejector seat fail and then when Goose’s ‘chute gets all tangled and he plummets to the ocean and dies. Obviously).

You can really throw around nice ‘Top Gun’ metaphors when you put your mind to it.

The most perfect phrase in this lovely post: “flotsam in a sunny room.” WHERE do these astonishing images come from?? Can’t wait to see what the new year brings, sas….
