mothering sunday

www.marriedtothesea.com

Like a magpie, I seem to find pairs and pairs of earrings that would be perfect for Mum, and just a few years ago a random pair of dangling gemstones would have been enough to prickle my eyes, but these day I often buy them anyway and wear them on Mum’s behalf. And this weekend I found I was able to celebrate a kiwi Mother’s Day as a motherless daughter.

On Saturday I realised that I have sought out women who mother me, and who also let me take care of them. Over a bottle of wine I listened and reassured and hopefully supported a loved friend in the way that she has done for me over the years. With no topic taboo, Saturday lunches with Noshy are legendarily honest, verbose affairs. Nosh is the only woman I would trust to arrange (at short notice), for a table display of a life-sized dwarf made of pâté, and seventeen Cossack dancers, in a baroque ballroom (should ones party require said items). She is awesome.

This morning I had a lovely Skype date to Aussie with the fabulous Ms Bea. Though we have never spoken before, her voice and personality is exactly as I expected after over a year of reading her spectacular blog. I was so flattered that Bea had asked for my advice on an upcoming speaking event, I am not sure who got more out of our little jam session. She will be talking about love. And the law. And authenticity. She embodies this stuff. I felt such a rush of pride and love and woo hoo-ness for Bea.

And this afternoon, while Science Guy downed several pints and sang out of tune chants about the suspect parentage of various Arsenal players, I sat at my desk with an afternoon of book writing planned. But I just wasn’t feeling it. So I was kind to myself this afternoon. I went downstairs, made a mug of tea and watched Julie & Julia. It was a satisfyingly lovely sob-fest.

The perfect movie to have watched with Mum.

Happy Mothers Day.

yes, I thought Julie & Julia was quite satisfying. Meryl embodied Julia, to me anyway. I couldn’t get past the self-centered Julie, though, she just didn’t quite do it for me. I’m heading over the Ms. Bea’s blog now, on your fine recommendation.

Oh gorgeous, you are just the BEST. Seriously, the best.

Your mama? She would be busting at the seams with pride over just how much freakin’ awesome you bring to this world.

I’m feeling a crazy rush of gratitude and awe and inspiration. And the irrepressible urge to wear my dangliest, sparkliest earrings in your mum’s honour.

Love you to smushy bits. Happy Mother’s Day, my darling.

The dwarf of pate and cossack dancers sound like my kind of party…

And if Meg weren’t going to grab any dangly earrings I put on, I would on some for your Mum!
