friday five: the week of boo/yay

Yay: last Saturday morning a man from DHL couriers delivered me an iphone 4. I had to wait for Science Guy to get home (HE TOOK 46 YEARS ON PURPOSE) to work out how to put the sim card in, but I am now cured of my appless status and oh my, it really is the coolest gadget. Back in the pre-iphonic era, I was only able to make calls and texts. And perhaps tweet if standing under a cell mast. Now I can navigate across London, get from my sofa to running 10k, and play Angry Birds in meetings (nb: find the mute button first). My whole life has changed. I can’t stop rubbing it.

Boo: Badger has chewed completely through the wires that connect the macbook to the lovely big monitor. Its going to cost £100 to fix it. And Rex is chewing through as much of Badger’s food as he can access. We aren’t sure if he is ‘comfort eating’ because she is ‘stealing’ his pats, or if he is trying to starve her out. Oooo cat news: we’re living RIGHT on the edge here no?

Yay: over there on the right, no up a bit, under the menus, you see there is a link to ‘The Red Wheelbarrow’? If you click there… oh, right you’ve done it already. Ok well if you ever navigate back here you’ll already know that this is where I am posting iphone photos. I promise not to fill it with cats.

Boo: after 14 months it looks like I will be leaving my current contract. The project is reaching a natural handover point, and so the process of job hunting has commenced. In the worst recession in known history. Yikes. Send good jobbie juju.

Yay: I am doing an akward white lady dance at being asked to speak at the NZ Women’s Business Network dinner in September. I have the pre-pudding slot which is a great motivator for succinctness.

Hope your week has been more Yays than Boos.

Aha, cable chewing. We are old hands at that one.

It cost me a fortune (in both time and money) to ge the laptop up and running again after it was short circuited by cat chewing.

The trick is one of three things.

Trunking. Himself has trunked all the major cables now.
Sellotape. cables that cannot be trunked are wrapped in layers of sellotape. It does not look good but it works.
Special spray. I can’t remember what this is called but you get it from pet shops and spray wires with it. It emits a foul taste apparently.

Oh and also don’t worry too much about Rex. Kitten food is just a whole lot yummier than cat food apparently. This happened with Aurora when Park first arrived. In the end I fed him separately and weaned him onto adult food as soon as he’d been neutered because Aurora was just becoming obese on fatty kitten food!!!

iPhone photos are brill – and do you know what’s even briller? Downloading the Camerabag App. Costs next to nothing and you can do fantabulous things with your photos AFTER you’ve taken them. This is an important distinction because with the Hipstamatic App (which many people rave about), you have to decide what process you want to apply to the photo BEFORE you take it, which is far more limiting in my experience. Camerabag for me, every time. You can also download a Camerabag app for either Mac or PC so you can then fiddle and fart around all the other digital photos you have in your library. Warning – MASSIVE TIME-SPONGE!

Oh, this was a deliciously giggly post. Thank you. Just purr-fect for my Friday night of labouring over a running-hot laptop. Happy weekend.
