sixty two

The last few weeks have been a happy vortex of warm, sunny days, long weekends, new and old friends. Our garden has been filled with the sounds of clinking glasses, the hiss of meat on flame, laughter. We inherited a wooden bench seat from the old couple who used to live here, and the shed contained a table and chairs; I’ve invested in cushions, fairy lights and a spotty outdoor tablecloth. The garden is flowering away nicely thanks to Science Guy’s handyman skills which extended to fixing the water reticulation system. There is even a fauxhutukawa!

I love the hour before a party; chopping up all manner of yum for salads, the smell of the BBQ heating up, whipping cream for The Mandatory Pavlova. And welcoming loved ones with a glass of cold wine as Rex and Badger shamelessly tart themselves about for pats and food scraps. In these small ways, I am reminded that I am truly, my mothers daughter.

On a rusty hook in one corner of the garden is a string of aged brass elephants, complete with coloured beads and tiny bells. I love the gentle chiming sound they make when picked up by the wind. Without fail, each year before her birthday I find trinkets, jewellery, a book; always the something that would have been the perfect gift.

Happy birthday Mum, wherever you are.

I miss you.

    Happy birthday Sas’s mum.

I want you to know that her friends love and treasure her, and that we know we can never replace her love for you (or yours for her)… but we love her fiercely and know you are as amazed and delighted by her still, as we are.

happy birthday to the woman who brought the most astounding red headed daughter to the world. she is a force of nature, tender and fierce when she needs to be. and, clearly, she has one hell of a guardian angel.

    i love you sas.
